Fire and Emergency Response Program

Federal and state OSHA regulations require that an employer establish an emergency action plan for all potential emergencies that can be expected in the workplace. These emergencies include accidental release of toxic gases, chemical spills, fires, explosions, and bodily harm and trauma caused by workplace violence.

The effectiveness of response during emergencies depends on the amount of planning and training performed. When emergency action plans are required by a particular OSHA standard, the plan must be in writing. The plan must include, as a minimum, the following elements: Emergency escape procedures and escape route assignments. Procedures to be followed by employees who remain to perform critical plant operations before the plant is evacuated. Procedures to account for all employees after emergency evacuation has been completed. Rescue and medical duties. The preferred means for reporting emergencies.
